Sonal Matai

Managing Director & President - US Business, Karl Storz United States

Sonal currently is the Managing Director & President - US Business, Karl Storz United States, where he leads a team of 2700+ dedicated employees across research and development, manufacturing, and commercial operations. In this position he is responsible for the overall operations of Karl Storz US and the associated profit and loss performance. He is active in developing corporate strategies to continue achieving profitability, business growth and increase market share for Karl Storz through the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies, innovative solutions and harnessing the capabilities of the human capital at Karl Storz. Sonal was previously Managing Director, KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc. the commercial operations arm for Karl Storz in the US and led a team of 1600+ employees where he spearheaded a period of significant innovation and market share expansion. Sonal has a diverse background of competing in global markets across Medical Devices, Consumer health and B2C business environments. Over the past two plus decades, he has worked in senior commercial, marketing and strategy positions at Karl Storz, Philips, and GE across the world in the USA, Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand, and India. Prior to joining KARL STORZ, Sonal had a short stint as CEO, Onera Health (Series B sleep diagnostics start up) based in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Sonal has also served as the North American Business Leader for Philips’ Sleep and Respiratory Care business. He successfully led the $1.3 billion enterprise with 700+ FTEs through the COVID pandemic, meeting the surge in demand for ventilation and oxygen solutions, and transitioned the business to a more service-oriented model. Sonal is currently on the Board of Directors of California Life Sciences, and in the past has served on the Board of Directors for Respironics Inc. and Council for Quality Respiratory Care (CQRC). Sonal is passionate about solving problems and delivering patient care across the health continuum in myriad care settings and making a measurable difference in patient outcomes. Sonal grew up in India and Nigeria and holds dual citizenship (American and Dutch). He holds an MBA degree from IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland, and a Master’s in Philosophy and a Master’s in Economics from the University of Pune, India.
